About
food + body liberation support
🌀🇵🇸🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
Kala Nutrition offers affinity to pamilya [family] stories working alongside the kalabaw [carabao]—water buffalo endemic to the Philippines. Kalabaw are dependable farm companions—trusted besties who provide food security, hardworking partnership, and a deep connection to nature. These qualities inspire our approach to care work.
We considered the name Kala as it translates to "turtle shell" in the Filipino language— chosen as an expression in deep reverence for the lands we now live and work as settlers and uninvited guests on Turtle Island. Our logo showcases the ancient Philippine script Baybayin, displaying the consonants KA-LA to represent "Kala Nutrition."
MABUHAY [WELCOME]
Together with current clinical nutrition knowledge and teachings, our team integrates wholistic practices rooted in Ancient, Indigenous wisdom, including:
🐉
Intuition and ancestral connection
Dream work
Nature-based practices
Ritual and divination
Art and storytelling
Choice-based movement
Mind-body and somatic practices.
🐉
Our work is guided by collective care and community liberation. We are informed by the wisdom, resilience, and brilliance of Black, Brown, Indigenous, Latino, Two-Spirit, Transgender, Disabled, Fat, Justice-Impacted, Women, and Femme communities. Their leadership shapes our approach and inspires our commitment to health justice and food sovereignty. We honor both resistance and joy—past and present.*
MEET DIETITIAN MALOU
Malou Aragon Nichols (she/they/siya) is a registered dietitian nutritionist and Usui Reiki practitioner working at the intersections of race, gender, and class. As a second-generation Filipinx and third-culture kid, Malou aspires to bring cultural humility, lived experience, and radical compassion to their care work. To better support clients dealing with trauma or chronic stress, they're currently in their first year of Somatic Experiencing Practitioner Training.
WE OFFER MEDICAL NUTRITION THERAPY
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach; however, most of our clients meet with us for at least 15-30+ weeks. An example, reference point for what our work may look like:
🌈
Phase 1 - Nutrition Assessment
During the first phase of care, a Board-Certified Registered Dietitian will offer you a nutrition assessment to learn more about your lifestyle, values, nutrition concerns, and medical history. We encourage partnership and engagement during sessions to create a personalized care plan based on your unique needs.
Phase 2 - Nutrition Strategies + Re-Nourishment
We will focus on your relationship with food, tools for daily nourishment, self-care management, and/or whatever helps you feel supported in your journey.
Phase 3 - Nutrition Practice + Integration
We offer ongoing support as you are more confident and consistent with nutrition care practices and tools. Note: Conditions like diabetes, digestive disorders, or eating disorders may require longer-term care.

❓
What can we expect from your team's nutrition approach?
Answer: We believe all humans deserve care, nourishment, and dignity—regardless of their body size or shape. We work towards a care plan with individuals to match their unique needs, values. The focal points of our nutrition approach are:
✏️
Grounded in Fat Liberation and weight inclusivity. We use "fat" as a neutral descriptor—not a judgment or moral measure. Our team intentionally does not use clinical language like “ob*sity” or “ovrw*ight”, due to its harmful impact on Black and Disabled communities.*
Through the lenses of Health at Every Size® (HAES) and Intuitive Eating (IE). We recognize that these frameworks are made possible by the ongoing liberation work of those with the most marginalized identities, especially Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQIA+ communities. We acknowledge that the core values behind HAES and IE aren’t new; many of these principles have long existed in Indigenous worldviews, such as sovereignty, relationship-based health.*
Informed by intersectionality (as defined by Kimberlé Crenshaw) and the understanding that justice movements must center gender and racial equity.*
✏️
❓

✅

AFAB, nonbinary, trans, and cis women

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We honor the Original Stewards - the Hinono’eiteen, Tsétsėhéstȧhese , Oc'eti S'akowin, Núuchiu and other Indigenous Peoples - of whose lands we work and live [colonially known as Fort Collins, Colorado.] We are settlers of Austronesian Filipino Visayan and Luzon ancestry; and belong to the Indigenous People of ethnolinguist groups Hiligaynon/Illongo, Waray Waray, and Tagalog, in tracing our lineage back to our recent ancestors. Our diasporic settler ancestors and our presence on stolen land (Turtle Island) influences the violence and oppression faced by People of the Global Majority, Disabled, Two-Spirit, Trans and Gender Non-conforming, Indigenous Peoples. We strive to support and follow the leadership of Indigenous, Two-Spirit, Elders, Wisdom Keepers, Artists, and Change-makers.
