About
food + body liberation support
“If you have come here to help me you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”
—Dr. Lilla Watson
Our approach to food and liberation support is rooted in our understanding of collective and community care. We humbly stands on the shoulders of and are informed by the brilliance of Black, Brown, Latino, Indigenous, Two-Spirit, Transgender, Disabled, Justice-Impacted, Women, Femme Individuals, and Humans who support the momentum towards Collective Liberation and beyond. We acknowledge the joy and resistance that continue to exist within and beyond justice movements.
KALA UPDATES for 2026
Our team is transitioning away from in-network participation with insurance plans and is working towards fully phasing this out by December 2025. Starting January 2026, our team will still accommodate private pay (or “out-of-pocket pay), however, will no longer be “taking insurance,” or considered an “in-network provider.”
For clients with out-of-network insurance benefits, we’re happy to provide a superbill (a detailed receipt of services), which you can submit directly to your insurance company to request out-of-network reimbursement. If you have any questions about this process (i.e. to receive a list of our private pay and sliding scale rates, or to discuss service bartering), please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to help guide you through it.

FOOD, COMPASSION, + CURIOSITY
Kala Nutrition Dietitian and Reiki Practitioner Malou Aragon Nichols (pronouns: she/they/siya) works at the intersections of race, gender, and class. She is a third-culture kid and second-generation Filipino/a/x American who acknowledges how their identities show up in the way they approach care. If any of the following resonate with you, working together may be a “good fit”:
— All folks are welcome! Our clientele includes LGBTQIA+ individuals, and many are AFAB, nonbinary, trans or cis women.
— Clients who have been told to cut out a cultural food and want to understand how to navigate their health concerns and relationship with food.
— Clients in fat, plus-size, straight-size bodies considering a weight-neutrality or fat-positivity.
— Clients who are working to manage chronic conditions or symptoms that may include anxiety and depression, eating disorders, disordered eating, PCOS, diabetes, heart health, etc.
— Clients who have sensory differences, trauma histories, and who have found it beneficial to or are currently working with a mental health counselor or therapist.
— Third culture kids or clients whose lived-experience before residing on Turtle Island [ United States ] are important narratives in their relationship to food and body-image.

NUTRITION THERAPY - WHAT TO EXPECT
Across health conditions or diagnoses, there are common themes on how to deliver effective personalized nutrition therapy- there is no one-size-fits-all! Below are suggested timeframes for each nutrition phase we may approach in our work. Please keep in mind that certain nutrition concerns—such as diabetes management, gastrointestinal distress, or eating disorders—often require ongoing support that may extend beyond these recommendations, potentially lasting a year or more.
phase 1
nutrition assessment + foundation
75 minute initial and 60 minute weekly follow-ups for 15+ weeks
You'll work closely with your dietitian, meeting weekly—based on your individual needs—to begin support focused on food and body liberation. Whether your goals involve balanced nutrition, food preparation, or planning ahead, this phase focuses on developing a solid nutrition care plan—one that includes values-aligned goals.
phase 2
nutrition strategies + re-nourishment
60 minute weekly or biweekly follow-ups for 15+ weeks
We'll learn more about your relationship to food and strategies to help navigate food, eating, and self-care management.
phase 3
nutrition practice + maintenance
60 minute biweekly or monthly follow-ups for 6+ months
Some call it accountability, we call it nutrition coaching support! We may meet less often during this time to provide space and encouragement to practice new tools/skills, reflect, and build confidence alongside your dietitian.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We honor the Original Stewards - the Hinono’eiteen, Tsétsėhéstȧhese , Oc'eti S'akowin, Núuchiu and other Indigenous Peoples - of whose lands we work and live [colonially known as Fort Collins, Colorado.] We are settlers of Austronesian Filipino Visayan and Luzon ancestry; and belong to the Indigenous People of ethnolinguist groups Hiligaynon, Waray Waray, and Tagalog, in tracing our lineage back to our recent ancestors. Our diasporic settler ancestors and our presence on stolen land (Turtle Island) influences the violence and oppression faced by People of the Global Majority, Disabled, Two-Spirit, Trans and Gender Non-conforming, Indigenous Peoples. We strive to support and follow the leadership of Indigenous, Two-Spirit, Elders, Wisdom Keepers, Artists, and Change-makers.
ABOUT KALA NUTRITION
Kala Nutrition offers affinity to pamilya [family] stories working alongside the kalabaw [carabao]—water buffalo endemic to the Philippines. Kalabaw are dependable farm companions—trusted besties who provide food security, hardworking partnership, and a deep connection to nature. These qualities inspire our approach to care work. We also considered the name Kala as it translates to "turtle shell" in the Filipino language— chosen as an expression in deep reverence for the lands we now live and work as settlers and uninvited guests on Turtle Island.
