About

food + body liberation support

nutrition counseling | eating disorder, disordered eating support | survivors and thrivers 🇵🇸🏳️‍⚧️ WELCOME 🏳️‍🌈🇵🇸 Maiku. Piicfako. Haaahe. Taŋyáŋ Yahípi. Mabuhay. Núuchiu. Tsétsėhéstȧhese. Hinono’eiteen. Pilipino. Clients seeking our nutrition services often describe having a tenuous, *blegh* relationship with food. Some are at a point in their journey where their health and well-being are challenged by a new diagnosis, prediabetes, diabetes, PCOS, PMDD, high cholesterol, or increasing concerns about aging. They want to find greater ease with food and self-care management... and care providers who see their inherent wholeness. Together with current nutrition teachings, and over 15 years of clinical nutrition experience, our team integrates wholistic practices rooted in Ancestral, Indigenous wisdom and collective health, such as: Intuition and ancestral connection Dream work Nature-based practices Ritual and divination Art and storytelling Choice-based movement Mind-body, somatic techniques ABOUT KALA Kala (pronounced like kah-lah) Nutrition was founded by Filipino/a/x dietitian Malou Aragon Nichols, second-gen ancestor in the diaspora. The name "Kala" is in affinity to pamilya/family stories working alongside the kalabaw—a water buffalo endemic to the Philippines. Kalabaw are dependable farm companions—trusted besties who provide food security, hardworking partnership, and a deep connection to nature. These qualities inspire our approach to care work. We work with and welcome folks of all backgrounds! Clients who work with us hold a variety of identities, which recently have included LGBTQIA+, people of the global majority, women, queer, gender-expansive, femme, disabled, neurodivergent, fat, straight-size, survivors, and third-culture. We join community conversations about food access and size inclusivity and offer support to those who are curious about honoring their food and health journey in different ways. We recognize the privilege of offering care through an intersectional lens, grounded in the work of civil rights activists and critical race theory scholars such as Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw. It is not possible to engage authentically in liberation-focused spaces without honoring the insight, labor, and lived experiences of individuals at the intersections of multiple marginalized identities. INDIGENOUS REVERENCE Our team acknowledges that the place we work and live—a biodiverse eco-tone where the Great Plains meet the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains—is the ancestral and unceded homeland of the Original Stewards—the Núuchiu, Tsétsėhéstȧhese, Hinono’eiteen, and other Native Peoples (so-called Fort Collins, Colorado). We hear of stories from Hinono'eino (or Inuna-ina) Elders that this valley is called ce'einox (or jaaianahaw) /the (game) bag or game bags/, known for it's abundance for hunting. Our diasporic settler ancestors and our presence on the stolen lands of Turtle Island influence the violence and oppression faced by People of the Global Majority, Two-Spirit, trans and Indigenous Peoples. We also recognize the violent history that displaced Indigenous communities from this land, including the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864, in which Arapaho and Cheyenne people—many of them women, children, and elders—were killed despite seeking peace and protection. We are settlers of Austronesian Filipino Visayan and Luzon ancestry and belong to the Indigenous People of the ethnolinguistic groups Tagalog, Illongo/Hiligaynon, and Waray-Waray, tracing our lineage back to our recent ancestors. We strive to support and follow the leadership of Black, Indigenous, Two-Spirit, Elders, Women, Wisdom Keepers, Artists, and Change-makers; To honor the enduring presence and resilience of Native communities who continue to care for this land today.
